RESTORATIVE STORYTELLING PRACTICES: RE-SEEING JO NIVISON HOPPER & MARION HOPPER.

When a historical figure is minimized or erased, there is always an opportunity to re-examine their place in our memories. This course focuses on using the recently restored archives of Jo Nivison and Marion Hopper to generate creative work of our own. We will be visited by local photographer, Lisa Levart, who focuses on telling empowering stories of women and a member of our archives & curatorial team, Veronica Murphy, to discuss the process of restoring these archives. This course is not only for women-identifying writers, but invites us all to think of how we can tell more complex and inclusive stories through our artistic practices. A photographer and our archival team will join us to discuss restoration and the power of images.

Rockland in Motion Artist Talk with Travis Stever

Meet the filmmakers of #RocklandInMotion: Veronica Murphy: CONSUM(HER), new media. The film is a glance-worthy consideration of how advertisers have negatively marketed to and historically projected upon women. Whether it be cosmetics, moisturizers, soaps or coffee—the industry has regularly found a profitable demographic in inferiority and insecurity. Veronica Murphy is an emerging artist in the United States exploring cultural themes of visual aesthetics & activism in New Media, Film and Photography. She is currently graduating from Purchase College, and previously graduated from Purdue University. Murphy uses new media and historical references to stimulate conversation and exploit predominant concerns focused on social dynamics, technology, and identity.

There will be a Zoom discussion hosted by Travis Stever on Wednesday, September 23, at 7:30. Travis is best known for playing guitar and singing background vocals for the rock group Coheed and Cambria, a career that has taken him all over the world. He grew up in Rockland County and Bergen County, and currently lives in Nyack with his wife and two children.

For a link to the discussion, please send an email to film@rivertownfilm.org. The program is free, with a suggested donation of $10 or more for those who can here: https://bit.ly/2Rq0EIb

Rockland in Motion Film Festival

Rockland in Motion Film Festival

The line-up in #RocklandInMotion includes veteran filmmakers alongside first time and early career filmmakers. They create in a variety of genres including music video, drama, comedy, and documentary. Some of these films were produced virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic, in a statement of human resourcefulness and a refusal to stop creating. Quite a few incorporate dance, a form of art that, like film, is an art of movement.

Rockland in Motion is divided into two parts of approximately an hour each, with each part streaming continuously for two weeks. The filmmakers have provided introductions of thirty seconds or less that run before their film. Information on where in the program each film begins will be provided, to make each film easy to find and return to.

Available for stream at http://www.rivertownfilm.org
